Dexter Mayfield

Expect the unexpected when it comes to one of our new choreographers, Dexter Mayfield.  Dexter, born and raised in Dallas, TX, began his dance career in one of the most positive and encouraging settings any performer can start their journey, in church.  He joined the Acts of Praise Dance Ministry, an all male praise dance troupe of 10 to 15 young men, at St. Luke Community United Methodist Church under the Direction of Darryl Gilmore, at the age of 14.  It did not take him long to make the critical connection between emotion and dance before he was featured as a principle dancer with this exciting and unique group of young men.  Although there was no formal technical training involved with the Acts of Praise, these young men used the raw talent and emotion it takes to convey the true meaning of how to connect movement and music to the rest of the world.  Dexter also served as a guest choreographer for both the Youth Sacred Dance program and Acts of praise II, the second generation of Acts of Praise, for two years.

Dexter began take his dance career to the next level by training at the Powerhouse of Dance, with choreographers Delmar Reyna, Sean Jackson, and Tony Battle, and the Centre for Dance, with choreographers Keith Green, Jenny Durbin, Kim McSwain, Amy Z, and Liz Collinsworth, and Ashley Pia.  Here is where Dexter rediscovered his love for dance and performing, and where he also realized that regardless of your age, gender, race or size, talent is TALENT, and should be recognized and appreciated no matter what.  And after only 3 months of formal class training, Dexter attended the one event that would change his life forever, Monsters of Hip Hop Dance convention in Dallas, TX.   At the conclusion of Monsters, following his first professional audition, Dexter received the Ailey Extension Scholarship in 2008, and the Millennium Dance Complex Scholarship in 2009, two of the most coveted awards at Monsters of Hip Hop.

After his first Monsters of Hip Hop, Dexter decided to pursue dance full time, and joined Battleground Productions, led by Tony Battle, as a dancer and recording artist.  In the summer of 2008 Dexter decided to move to Houston, TX, to not only advance his dance career, but also to spend time with his family.  During this time Dexter began taking classes at Planet Funk when he was invited to join their Professional Team, choreograph for Sr. Slam & the Professional Team, & serve as Co-Director of Planet Funks Jr. Slam Squad with Lacey Grantz.

In the summer of 2009 Dexter decided that it was time to make the big move to Los Angeles, CA, and pursue his dance career full time.  And since he has been in LA, he is now signed with MSA Talent Agency, and he has worked and trained with the best in the industry including Tony Basil, Michael Rooney, Matt Cady, Kevin Maher, Rhapsody James, Donyelle Jones, Derrell Bullock, Tricia Miranda, Alan “Phlex” Kirk, Isaac Tualaulelei, Dejan Tubic, Tony Czar, Gerald Scott & so many more.  He now teaches as a substitute instructor at International Dance Academy in Hollywood

With an open mind, open heart, optimistic outlook on life and a fresh new style, Dexter Mayfield not only hopes to take his career to the next level, but dance as whole, hoping to inspire others to accept themselves for who they are and embrace all of their talents as well.
